How to remotely control an electric lock with Relay Jeweller

Updated

Only a qualified electrician must install Relay Jeweller, regardless of the type of electrical circuit to which the relay is connected.

Relay Jeweller can be used to block access to a room by locking an electric lock automatically when the system is armed. A user can also manage the electric lock’s power supply manually via an Ajax app or by pressing Button Jeweller and automatically using a scenario.

The relay opens and closes electrical circuits and controls the power supply to electrical appliances. Relay Jeweller is a low-current remote control relay with a potential-free “dry” contact.

For more complex systems, the Ajax portfolio includes MultiRelay Fibra, a four-channel relay, and Superior MultiTransmitter IO (4X4) Fibra, an integration module with two relays.

Choosing the right lock

In this article, we will explore two of the most common types of electric locks: electromechanical and electromagnetic.

Electromechanical locks can be pulse or bistable, while electromagnetic locks can only be bistable.

  • Pulse locks are locked/unlocked when an electric pulse is applied.
  • Bistable locks are locked/unlocked regardless of the presence or absence of electric current.

Electromechanical locks

ajax electric lock

This type of lock is equipped with a small DC electric motor that controls the door bolt when an electrical signal is applied.

According to fail-safety, the locks are divided into two types:

  • Normally locked (fail-secure). Such locks require power to unlock the door. If the power is lost, the door will remain locked.

Such locks are prohibited for use on exit routes!

  • Normally unlocked (fail-safe). Such locks require power to lock the door. If the power is lost, the door will become unlocked. The locks are used in constructing emergency exits or other passages where doors must be opened freely during a power outage.

Electromagnetic locks

Such locks consist of a unit with an electromagnet and a metal strike plate. Their operation is based on magnetic attraction. The unit with an electromagnet is mounted on the door frame, and a metal plate is installed on the door. When the power is on, the lock attracts and holds the plate, locking the door. When the power is lost or interrupted, the electromagnetic lock unlocks.

Backup power supply

It is recommended to provide any electric lock with a backup power supply:

  • If a lock is normally closed, it will be possible to unlock the door in the event of a power outage to enter or leave the room urgently.
  • Electromagnetic and normally open electromechanical locks without a backup power supply do not prevent access to the room.

Make sure you can open the door in case of an emergency. For example, connect Button Jeweller to unlock the lock urgently.

Schematic diagram of connecting Relay Jeweller to a 12/24 V electric lock

ajax relay

According to the schematic diagram, you must have an external 12/24 V power source.

  1. Connect the power source to the relay’s power terminals.
  2. Connect “+” of the power source to one of the relay’s contact terminals and “+” of the electric lock to the other relay’s contact terminal.
  3. Connect “–” of the electric lock to “–” of the power source.

With this connection diagram, Relay Jeweller can control the power supply to the electric lock.

Electromagnetic and bistable electromechanical lock control

Configuring Relay Jeweller

  1. Open Ajax app and select the space.
  2. Go to the Devices  tab.
  3. Open the Relay Jeweller menu, go to its Settings , and select Bistable operating mode. Then, set Normally open for the Contact state setting.

Manual control of an electric lock

To change the state of relay contact terminals, tap on the toggle in the Relay Jeweller line.

ajax mobile applications

When the relay contact terminals are closed, an electric lock is powered and remains locked. When the relay contact terminals are open, the lock is de-energized and is unlocked.

Pulse lock control

Configuring Relay Jeweller

  1. Open Ajax app and select the space.
  2. Go to the Devices  tab.
  3. Open the Relay Jeweller menu, go to its Settings , and select Pulse operating mode. Then, set Pulse time to 0.5–15 seconds (the value will be indicated in the electric lock documentation).

Manual control of an electric lock

To trigger a pulse and change the lock state, tap on the pulse icon in the Relay Jeweller line.

Automatic control of an electric lock

Create a scenario to automatically activate one or several electric locks by arming/disarming the system, by alarm, by pressing Button Jeweller, or by schedule.

A scenario can be created in the Relay Jeweller settings: Devices Relay JewellerSettings Scenarios.

Additional features

An electric lock can be managed automatically when the security state changes according to the unavoidability principle (in German, Zwangsläufigkeit).
